Safety Switches (RCDs)
A safety switch is the single best electrical safety upgrade for most older homes.
Why it matters
How they protect people. An RCD constantly compares the current going out on the active wire with what comes back. If some is leaking, for example through a person, it cuts the power within a fraction of a second. Household RCDs are typically rated to trip at 30 milliamps.
Circuit breakers aren't enough. Breakers and fuses protect wiring from overload. They are not designed to stop an electric shock to a person, but RCDs are.
Compliance. The Australian Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) require RCD protection for final subcircuits in new installations, and generally when circuits are added or altered. Many older homes have none, or only one on the power circuits.
Landlords and resale. Building inspectors commonly flag missing safety switches, and landlords have safety obligations to tenants. Adding RCDs is a simple way to show your property is well looked after.

How Patrick does it
- You call or book. Tell Patrick what's happening. Photos help.
- Inspect & test. Patrick isolates power where needed and tests to find the real cause, not just the symptom.
- Clear quote. You get the price and the options before any work starts.
- Work done safely. The work follows the Australian Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), using quality materials.
- Test & certify. Everything is tested before power goes back on. In NSW, a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is issued where required.
- Tidy finish. The work area is left clean and Patrick walks you through what was done.
General information only. Every property is different, and Patrick will advise on your specific situation.
